 In Dental Care

Worldwide, close to 100% of adults suffer from tooth decay. As much as 10% of the global population suffers from severe gum disease.

Periodontitis starts with inflammation of the gums but can lead to gum recession and bone and tooth loss. Most people want to keep their pearly whites looking great and learn how to stop gum recession.

Keep reading for 5 great tips on taking care of one’s oral health.

1. Floss and Brush Every Day

Our dental team can’t recommend this enough! It may seem like a pain but working it into one’s evening routine isn’t hard. Floss first and then brush before going to bed.

Flossing has many benefits, including keeping dental disease and gum recession at bay. Of course, everyone should brush their teeth at least twice a day.

2. Visit Your Dentist for Regular Checkups

Visit the dentist twice a year for the best results. Here at Estrabillo Dental Group, we’re big on prevention. Seeing us twice a year means less dental work down the road.

3. Use Neem Mouthwash

Neem mouthwash is an alternative to harsh antiseptic mouthwashes. Neem mouthwash comes from a plant that has antibacterial properties.

After flossing and brushing, rinse the mouth with some neem mouthwash. Studies show neem is as effective as harsher alternatives.

4. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic tradition. It takes getting used to but there’s some evidence it reduces plaque. One study showed oil pulling effective for reducing gingivitis caused by plaque buildup.

Use about one tablespoon of edible oil such as sesame or coconut oil. Swish the oil around your mouth, pulling it through your teeth, for about 10-15 minutes.

Do not swallow the oil since it’s full of bacteria. Spit the oil out into the garbage and then brush your teeth.

5. Healthy Nutrition Habits

Good dental and physical health starts with healthy nutrition habits. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day.

Crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, broccoli, and carrots help reduce plaque buildup. Cheese lowers the pH in your mouth which also reduces plaque.

Limit sugar and avoid fruit juices. Need something sweet to eat? Try raisins.

Raisins inhibit bacterial growth that’s linked with gum disease. Next time you need a snack, try a few raisins and some cheddar cheese.

Along with eating healthier foods, quit smoking! Smoking is bad for your health in many ways and increases your risk of gum disease.
